â€Å"The Lottery† - For Analysis 1. There are multiple examples to suggest that â€Å"The Lottery† is a ritualistic ceremony. In several instances â€Å"The Lottery† is referred to as a ritual: â€Å"..so much of the ritual had been forgotten..† and â€Å"†¦because so much of the ritual had been forgotten†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . In addition, the ceremony happens annually on June 27th, a t0:00 a.m., suggesting a ceremonial quality. This happens with such regularity that the citizens â€Å"†¦only half listened to the directions†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . This ceremony had been going on longer than before the oldest man in town, Old Man Warner, was born. Old Man Warner had, in fact, celebrated the lottery for 77 years! Many holidays today are celebrated without anyone really knowing what they were†¦show more content†¦Mr Summers, â€Å"Let’s finish quickly† and Mrs Dunbar, â€Å"Come on. Hurry up†. It must not be pleasant to murder part for the community, but they do it with such ceremony that the actual event catches one off guard. 3. The Lottery has a feeling of religious orthodoxy in that it is wrapped up in tradition. In many religious traditions a ritual killing of a scapegoat was a way to transfer the burden of sin, or evil, from one being to another. In ancient Jewish tradition, the ritual sacrifice transferred your sin to a lamb, making you clean and worthy again of divine attention. Although Shirley Jackson does not make it clear the need for a scapegoat in her story, the village must provide an annual sacrifice. She makes it clear at several points that the reason for the â€Å"lottery† has been forgotten, â€Å"although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . Shirley Jackson is likely trying to draw a comparison to many religious rituals, that might take place without remembering the original significance. In â€Å"The Lottery, some villages no longer feel the need to celebrate a â€Å"lottery†, â€Å"Some places have already quit lotteries†. Which is seen as â€Å"pure folly†. Some think of intuition as a mystical power, others think it is just lucky guesswork; either way, intuition tells the brain what it needs to know before our conscious catches up. Each generalization contains different factors, leaving the choice of what factors to leave in and which to leave out. Causing a difficult confrontation of what to believe and what to forget. In Sandra Cisneros’ novel, The House on Mango Street, the universal process of rapid cognition inherently affects stereotyping and discrimination perpetuating gender and racial inequality. Humans obtain the ability to quickly read facial expressions and generalize personality traits. This past summer, I landed a new job at the Bay Harbor Yacht Club. There are three restaurants that were incorporated in the Yacht club; The Lange Center, Quarter Deck, and the Beach House. The Beach House was where I worked at with two others. Together, we accomplished many things for ourselves and the restaurant itself. In order to do that, we had certain unsaid rules that all three of us abided by. At which I will bring up later on. Eventually, we became what you call an activity system. If you do not know what an activity system is; it is groups of people doing work together, who have common motives and processes to achieve those motives. That activity system turned us into a well put together team just through the three months of summer. We had Karl, who was the boss/manager of the kitchen and Josh who was the other person who ran the kitchen with me. Josh and I were not the ones in charge but Karl always made sure that we had say in everything that happened because ultimately, for three people to run a kitchen, you need to all agree on something. Between the three of us, we made that place make the most members happy, and the most money throughout the summer for the Yacht club. Not only because of how hard we worked to make sure people were satisfied but because of how well we communicated with each other. We feel that as our sight, hearing and joints begin to fail us and we realise that we are approaching the end of our lives we assume that we will become â€Å"grumpy old† men and women. However research consistently, and surprisingly, shows that older adults in fact often report a greater satisfaction with life as they age. Not only that, they are actually better at emotional regulation than younger adults(Carstensen, Pasupathi, Mayr, Nesselroade, 2000). Researchers have described this as Socioemotional Selectivity theory(Carstensen, Isaacowitz, Charles, 1999). As people age they show more ability to regulate their emotions and to maximise those goals that are focused in the present and have more emot ional meaning ( Carstensen, Fung, Charles, 2003). That this effect is possibly due to perceived amount of time left and not just age is borne out by research that shows the emphasis on having positive, meaningful emotional experiences in the present is also observed in younger adults who have a terminal illness. Whereas ordinarily, younger adults would be expected to seek future orientated experiences and knowledge, those with limited time remaining instead seek present optimisation and show the Positivity effect in attentional bias, (Carstensen Fredrickson, 1998). Beethoven started to takelessons for the piano, violin and possibly the viola with his father as his teacher. In 1778, Beethovens father arranged a public concert in Bonn. After the concert,his father realized that he must look elsewhere to teach his son. Beethoven soon began to take lessons from a man named Christian Neefe. During Beethovens time of development, Neefes teachings were vital, and alsothrough him, Beethoven gained a firm musical grounding. With Neefesteachings, Beethoven was encouraged to look beyond Bonn, so in 1787, he set outfor Vienna, but had to return on account of his mothers sickness. WhenBeethoven returned from Vienna, he was appointed assistant organist and wasalso a viola player in the court orchestra. In the winter of 1788, Beethoven wasengaged to play in a theater orchestra that the Elector had organized. Beethovens work atcourt gained him valuable experience of orchestral practice and composition. In1790, Beethoven met a man named Haydn, and in 1792 Beethoven decided thathe would go to Vienna and study with this man Haydn. A few month after arriving in Vienna, Beethoven received word that his fatherhad died. His fathers death left Beethoven much pain and dispare, as well asfinancial problems. His salary was guaranteed by the Elector because of hisfriends at home, and even Haydn tried to help. Along with financial problems,Haydn, who was giving Beethoven lessons, decided that he could no longer helpBeethoven, and left on a trip to London. This loss of lessons didnt affectBeethoven much, as it turned out his lessons had not been much of a success. After this, Beethoven decided that he should stay in Vienna and try to make acareer for himself. In 1801, Beethoven began to notice a change in his hearing. At first, hesuffered day and night from a terrible buzzing in his head, but before long, he lostthe ability to distinguish pitch, and by 1803 he was virtually stone deaf. Duringthis time, Beethoven not once complained that he had become creatively impairedbecause of his deafness, in fact, he went on to comp ose the most adventurouspiano music ever written.
